our APProach.

We believe our approach to patient education and injury management is what makes us unique. Patient education is a very important part of the Sport & Spine approach. A clear understanding of what is going on has benefits to both patient and practitioner in working toward the common goal of recovery.

Helps Practitioners With:

determining treatment options
patient compliance with treatment recommendations
Patient adherence to home advice
Maximising treatment results

Helps Patients With:

Understanding what is going on
Why it keeps happening (if recurrent/chronic)
The practitioner role in your recovery

analysis and treatment tools.

The analysis and treatment tools utilised here at Sport & Spine are supported by research, and have been selected based on effectiveness in clinical practice. The real difference in the Sport & Spine approach lies in knowing when and where to apply a particular treatment tool. Knowing when NOT to, is equally as important. This is what makes us unique.

History Icon

History

A thorough health history will be taken to determine: What is going on, treatment options, if we can help and if an external referral is required.

Examination Icon

Examination

A comprehensive physical examination will be conducted including a functional movement evaluation.

Treatment

A number treatment tools are utilised at Sport & Spine. Use of each tool is determined by patient comfort and clinical indication.

Follow Up

Follow up and home advice is tailored to individual needs, and involves all or some of the following: Fascial release exercises, stretching exercises, strengthening exercises.

our Techniques.

Our comprehensive range of techniques allows us to treat your injury in the best ways possible.

Functional Movement Evaluation.
Functional Movement Screen (FMS)

FMS is the screening tool used to identify limitations or asymmetries in seven fundamental movement patterns that are key to functional movement quality in individuals with no current pain complaint or known musculoskeletal injury. These movement patterns are designed to provide observable performance of basic loco motor, manipulative and stabilising movements by placing an individual in extreme positions where weaknesses and imbalances become noticeable if appropriate mobility and motor control is not utilised.

SELECTIVE FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT ASSESSMENT (SFMA):

The SFMA is the movement based diagnostic system, designed to clinically assess 7 fundamental movement patterns in those with known musculoskeletal pain. The assessment provides an efficient method to systematically find the cause of symptoms, not just the source, by logically breaking down dysfunctional patterns and diagnosing their root cause as either a mobility problem or a stability/motor control problem.

This systematic process allows clinicians to clearly match their intervention to the main problem of the patient. This model efficiently integrates the concepts of altered motor control, the neurodevelopmental perspective, and regional interdependence into musculoskeletal practice.

MOVEMENT COMPETENCY SCREEN (MCS):

The objective of the Movement Competency Screen (MCS) is to identify which fundamental movement patterns can be aggressively loaded and which require developmental attention. The MCS is made up of five movements that provide the athlete with an opportunity to demonstrate their movement competency within each fundamental pattern. The MCS movements are performed with a body weight load and are the squat, lunge‐and‐twist, bend‐and‐pull, push up, and single leg squat.

Chiropractic Techniques.

Chiropractic Techniques.

The chiropractic techniques utilised at Sport and Spine range from traditional manual and table assisted adjustment techniques, to very low force instrument assisted techniques.

Diversified Chiropractic Technique

This is one of the more traditional chiropractic adjustment techniques and can be considered the most manual technique utilised at Sport and Spine Chiropractic. It involves a manual therapeutic thrust applied by hand, using controlled leverage, amplitude, and velocity in a specific direction to an isolated joint. This can be applied to the spine, or extremities such as the ankle, knee, hip, wrist, elbow, or shoulder to help restore appropriate joint function.

Thompson Drop Table Technique

If manual techniques are not indicated or preferred then the Thompson adjustment technique can be utilised. It can be considered a moderate force technique and involves a thrust applied by hand, to an isolated joint using specially designed tables to assist. This technique can also be applied to the spine, or extremities as required.

Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique

If manual or table assisted techniques are not indicated or preferred then the Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique (AMCT) can be utilised. This is the lowest force technique available at Sport and Spine and involves delivering a small thrust using a specially designed instrument, to an isolated joint. This technique can also be applied to the spine, or extremities as required.

Soft Tissue Mobilisation.

We utilise a combination of soft tissue mobilisation techniques. The goal of soft tissue mobilisation is to break down sticky scar tissue and normalise movement between tissue layers.

Soft Tissue Mobilisation.
What is Soft Tissue Mobilisation and Why is it Used?

Soft tissue mobilisation is a treatment method designed to restore normal function to the muscles, tendons, ligaments nerves and fascia of the body. These tissues become damaged or altered through overuse, previous injury and /or current injury. When an injury occurs in the tissue, whether repetitive or sudden, part of the repair process is to grow fibrous scar tissue over the area of injury to help it heal. This scar tissue sticks not only to either side of the torn tissue, but also to surrounding healthy areas causing tissue layers to become stuck together. When tissue layers are unable to slide above, below and/or through one another, dysfunction and pain follows.

The soft tissue mobilisation techniques used at Sport & Spine include Active Release Technique (ART) which has long been the soft tissue treatment of choice in the greater athletic community, and Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM). Both methods have proven to be very effective at breaking down areas of problematic scar tissue.

ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUES® (ART):

Active Release Techniques (ART), is a patented manual soft-tissue treatment system that addresses the problematic sticky scar tissue described above. It involves a manual release of scar tissue build up by hand. Generally the positive effects of ART can be noticed immediately, if applied correctly, which is why it has become one of the most sought after treatment systems in the world.

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM)

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM) involves the gentle application of a specialised instrument to problem scar tissue to restore mobility of the soft tissues as opposed to a release method applied by hand.
